What is AI visibility, and how do you measure it?
Rankoya team6 min read
When someone asks a search engine for "specialty coffee beans", they get a page of links and choose for themselves. When they ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity the same thing, they often get an answer that has already chosen: a short list of brands, with a sentence on each.
AI visibility is whether your brand is on that list, and how it is described when it is.
Why it is different from rankings
A Google ranking is a position on a page of results. You can be tenth and still be seen. An AI answer usually names a handful of options and stops. If you are not named, the person asking may never know you exist, and nothing in your analytics will tell you that you were left out.
That makes AI visibility something you have to measure on purpose. It does not show up as a drop in traffic, because the visit never happened.
What to measure
Four things together give a useful picture.
1. Mentions
For each question you care about, is your brand named in the answer? Check each engine separately. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews draw on different sources and often disagree.
2. Position in the answer
Being named first and being named fifth are not the same result. When an answer lists options, the order matters for the same reason it does on a results page: people read from the top.
3. Sources cited
Many AI answers cite the pages they drew on. Those citations show you what each engine trusts for your topic: review sites, comparison articles, forums, competitors' guides. If the cited pages never mention you, the answer is unlikely to either.
4. Share of voice
On its own, "mentioned in 6 of 20 questions" is hard to judge. Compared with your competitors over the same questions, it becomes useful: you can see who the engines favour, and whether that is changing.
Why measure often
AI answers are not fixed. The same question can get a different answer next week as engines update, as new pages are published and as competitors change their content. A single check tells you about one moment. A daily or weekly series tells you which way things are moving, and lets you connect a change in the answers to something you or a competitor did.
What moves it
There is no switch that makes an engine name you. What tends to help is the same work that helps search: clear pages that answer the question directly, accurate information about what you offer, and being mentioned on the sources the engines already cite. The difference is that you can now see, question by question, where that work is missing.
How Rankoya measures it
Rankoya asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews the questions you choose, and rechecks them every day. For each answer it records whether you are mentioned, your position, the sources cited and the sentiment of the mention, and compares your share of voice with up to five competitors. Questions you miss become tasks in a plan that says what Rankoya will draft and what is left for you. You can read the details in our methodology, or see the feature on the AI visibility page.
The next question is which questions to track. That is the subject of our guide to choosing them.
